It is hard to say anything about this map that hasn't been already told. Starting from Counter-Strike 1,6 and onwards to the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive to the new and repolished map. There is a lot of exciting things in/on this map and a lot of tales that date tens of years ago. If you feel nostalgic, read on and enjoy.
This map had its debut in 1,1 version of the game. Dust 2 derived out of normal dust map that came out back in 1999. The creator of these maps was Dave Johnston. Dave got the idea for this map from a game that was still developing called Team Fortress 2. The map gained enormous popularity in short time. Just like the trilogy in movies, the last part can never be as successful as the first one, his idea of Dust 3 did not meet the expectations of players. After that Valve, Hidden Path and Turtle Rock Studios rearranged the map slightly and made it a competitive map.
One of the most famous graffiti on the map is the Goose near the A site. It was made honoring “Minh Gooseman Le“, one of the game creators. The goose is saying two letters, and on the Arabic language, they mean gooses.
Soon after the release of the polished version of the map, players noticed that the origin of the map was transferred from the Middle East to Morocco.
One more symbol that was brought back with the new version of the map was a Terrorist side character holding four AWP-s (in-game sniper). This graffiti reminds us of a match that was played in ESL ONE Cologne tournament, back in 2015. It was the finale of the competition and the first map was Dust 2, both teams played overtime and fnatic decided to buy four snipers (since they were already full with money), of course after that, this move has passed to legend.
Dust 2 was famous for its simplicity when playing. It was shaped like a one-sided cube. The connection between A and B site thru the middle of the map allowed the players a fast rotation so one side can help the other if needed. Over the years, players began to develop better strategies and pus the map to its limits. The terrorist team can throw flash grenades over the wall and quickly take control of a significant portion of the map. The most common formation for both sides is 2-1-2 where two players go for site A, one player is in mid, and two players go to the B site.
Many of the old players tend to favor this map over the other ones, even the modern ones. Many times we can see older generations of friends gathering in the coffee shops or internet pubs and playing old Counter-Strike 1,6 5v5. Some things have no price, and Valve, Steam and other creators of this game will keep this map as their emerald gem.
