The Cleveland Browns will be one of eight teams in the hunt for a head coach. They will also be on the shortlist for snagging one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. Josh McDaniels wants to be their next head coach.
According to Steve Doerschuk of CantonRep.com, McDaniels is “enthusiastically interested” in the Browns head coaching vacancy. His interest makes a lot of sense based on what he has done in the past. He is no stranger to working with young quarterbacks.
When was the head coach for the Denver Broncos, he was ecstatic to work with Tim Tebow. He was able to get creative with his playbook and develop his game a little bit. Unfortunately, McDaniels as was fired after the 2010 season and didn’t get to continue his training with Tebow.
Similarly, Cleveland has a situation that appeals to McDaniels. They have a plethora of young talent on the roster. They have Baker Mayfield, a rising star quarterback that was taken number one overall in the NFL Draft. They also have Nick Chubb, Myles Garrett, and Denzel Ward. Not to mention a dynamic wide receiver like Jarvis Landry.
Even though Cleveland may seem attractive to Josh, he has his eyes on other teams as well. As NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported, he is expected to interview with the Green Bay Packers on Friday. Who doesn’t want the chance to coach Aaron Rodgers? McDaniels could potentially transition from one hall of fame quarterback to another.
One team the Browns don’t need to worry about is another franchise in the state of Ohio. Per Mike Garafolo, McDaniels declined an opportunity to interview with the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s unclear as to why he turned down an interview.
When Josh lands a new coaching gig, he will have to clean up his reputation a little bit. Last year, he accepted a head coaching position with the Indianapolis Colts. Then he changed his mind and went back to the New England Patriots.
Reneging is never a good look. It’s one thing to turn down a job offer. It’s another thing to accept an offer and then change your mind. NFL teams wouldn’t take too kindly to get stiff armed again. Josh needs to decide and stick to it.
Luckily for McDaniels, there are teams who are still interested in him. Only time will tell which teams are still upset over his past reneging or not. If Cleveland gets their man, they will be a much-improved team.
