So, in my article about the shift publishers have to “live services”, after the loot box controversy. And while that topic more or less had died down, there has been a number of unexpected events that were caused by it. The main ones being the removal of loot boxes in Battlefront 2 and Shadow Of War.
Yes, the main causes of the controversy, have rolled back their extra monetization mechanics. Makes sense, since each showed the biggest problems with the system. Battlefront 2 showed how it could be used for the possibility to buy power and progress and Shadow Of War showed how they could be used to render a core mechanic of the game and story as worthless. And each coming out with a very bad response. The response for the first, making it seem like they were doing a mercy for their player base and the latter admitting that it made a mechanic of the game pointless, something that every critic has said day one.
Now those are the popular and most reported examples, but I am here to inform you of the other stuff.
About how many games, some big and some small, delay their games, JUST so they can rethink their strategy. More often than just replacing the whole thing with the old reliable microtransaction store. Aka the none gambling-like system, that is more transparent to the average gamer. Some games even remove things from their in-game stores, that have a slight resembles loot-boxes.
Not only that but from my experience as a person you constantly searching for a stable job, I can tell that a lot of companies or branches of said companies are posting adds for economic advisers. The main focus of being to figure out something to replace their loot box based economy. That right, there is an active search for something to replace that slot machine/ gambling like monetization system.
Now there are exceptions that somehow still hold their loot box system strong. The main one being Activision/Blizzard, which is not surprising. Blizzard itself has such a loyal fanbase, that during the whole discussion of loot boxes, they would jump and defend their favorite company since they are not as bad as the others. Basically, they will stay strong with the boxes, up until countries demand change, like what happens in China.
Other than the biggest company in the world, a lot of mobile games are not planning to remove them, mainly since they can't. Many of the mobile game that has come out recently, have a gacha system as it's base, by that I mean there is no game, without the player having to constantly open stuff to get things to play the game with.
This is the first time I have seen something like this, in all my years of looking closely at this industry. There have been controversies in the past, but never with such a backlash that brings significant changes. DLC's never disappeared, despite having multiple streams (such as content locking and being on the disk/ game itself). Pre-orders are still a staple, even though you are paying for could be a trash fire. But this, this got me off guard. Like this was a mistake, that now most of the gaming world wants to be removed or changed…and companies are attempting to comply with these demands.
I guess when a group of disgruntled people shout enough, in this day and age, they will be heard. By everyone apparently.
