Day Five of the World Cup saw the results go pretty much as expected. Sweden beat South Korea 1-0; Belgium downed debutantes Panama 3-0 and England beat Tunisia 2-1 thanks to a Brace from Tottenham star Harry Kane.
But it was day eight that gave soccer fans what may go down as the biggest shock of the Tournament. Argentina and quite possibly one the greatest players on the planet were defeated by Croatia. The loss put last years runner up on the brink of elimination after their tie with Iceland in their first game. With only one point from two games face a must win game against Nigeria on Tuesday. Nigeria kept their advancement hopes alive by defeating Iceland 2-0 on Friday. Croatia has already advanced with their two wins.
Brazil put their poor start in the first game with an emphatic 2-0 win over Costa Rica. Neymar scored his first goal of the Tournament, he was quite emotional breaking down in tears at the end of the match. After an injury during his club season it was thought that he might not even be fit in time for the World Cup.
Germany were stunned in their first match losing to Mexico, so can they bounce back in their next match as they face Sweden. The match is pretty much a must win if they want to advance to the round of 16, since both Mexico and Sweden have three points. Since both Argentina and Germany have struggled at the start is it possible that 2014’s finalists go out in the group stage?
The top two teams in each of the eight groups will make through to the next round of the World Cup. Russia and Uruguay have already advance from Group A, thereby eliminating Egypt and Saudi Arabia. In Group B Spain and Portugal both have 4 points at the top of the group but must wait till the last match to advance because Iran has three points and with a win could advance. Morocco has been eliminated.
In Group C France has advanced due to their two wins. Denmark has 4 points but must wait for the last match day to advance since Australia has a point. In Group D Croatia has advance with their two wins but the second spot is still up for grabs between Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland.
Group E has Brazil and Switzerland tied atop the table with 4 points after two matches but couldn’t advance as Serbia has three points. Costa Rica has been eliminated. In Group F Mexico and Sweden each have three points after they both posted wins after their first matches. After a shock loss to Mexico in their first match Germany face a must win in their next match against Sweden.
The Group G has Belgium leading the group after two wins, the latest a 5-2 dismantling of Tunisia. But must wait to see the result of the England Panama game tomorrow. England has three points after their opening win against Panama.
The only four teams already advancing are hosts Russia, Uruguay, France and Croatia. There are 12 spots left, with plenty to play for in the third round of group matches. So are more upsets in the making, will Cinderella teams live the ultimate dream and advance or will they have their hearts broken as the higher ranked teams right the ship?
