With the season finally coming to a close we look at the Premier League's best XI. The season ended with City as champions with United countlessly behind in 2nd. Spurs and Liverpool battled it out for Champions League spots. Chelsea, a soon to be Wenger-less Arsenal, and a revolutionary Burnley side are obtaining Europa League. And the unfortunate relegates are Swansea, Stoke, and West Brom. So without further ado, here is the Premier league Team of the Season.
What a legend this man is. The Spaniard has saved United time and time again. His reflexes and athleticism are incredible. This season De Gea achieved the record for most saves in a Premier League game with 14! 14!!! The way he stood up to Alexis Sanchez with that double save will be remembered for generations. Not only is he the best keeper in the Prem but maybe he is one of the best keepers in the world. That's why Real Madrid have been pursuing him for years.
Key Stat- David De Gea has been awarded this season with the Golden Glove for the keeping the most clean sheets in the division (18).
Jan Vertonghen is one of the most underrated defenders in the league. His composure and confidence on the ball is astounding. The Belgian isn't afraid to scramble in the air winning 3.1 aerial duels per game. His 86.4% passing accuracy makes it comfortable for Spurs to play out of the backline. Pochettino must be flattered to have a defender like him.
Key Stat- Vertonghen averages 4.5 long balls per game.
The Argentine has massively improved under Pep this season. His confidence and leadership for the Citizens is remarkable. It's what allows him to play a cool 92% passing accuracy. He is colossal in the air winning 2.5 aerial duels per game. Otamendi is a worthy defender for Man City and Guardiola respects his abilities and mentality.
Key Stat- Otamendi averages 3.8 clearances per game.
When no one stepped up for United at LB, Ashley Young stood up upon the pedestal. 32 years young, Ashley has provided United with a plethora of solid performances. A well structured defender who can stay back as well as deliver a cross, Young was an undervalued yet key member to the Red Devils.
Key Stat- Young averages 3.2 long balls per game.
There has been discrepancy for who is the best RB in the Premier League. Walker was a key figure for City but made unforgivable errors. Valencia was a notable mention as well. But the award goes to Conte's pet, Azpilicueta. I know Azpi doesn't play RB as often know due to the switch of the back 3 but the Spaniard is one of Chelsea's most prized possessions. A solid figure in the Blues defense winning 2.1 tackles per game and having 6 assists under his belt. The former Marsielle player is a leader and a motivation for the Blues to improve in the future.
Key Stat- Azpilicueta has played 3240 minutes this season. More than any other Chelsea star this season.
Fernandinho is hands down the most trivialized player in the league. He has the grit of Kante, but the class of David Silva. A reliable anchor in midfield averaging 1.9 tackles and 2.7 aerial duels per game. But a conductor as well with a whooping 90.1% passing accuracy and 3.5 long balls per game. Guardiola once said you can win the Champions League with 11 Fernandinhos. This level of recognition shows the significance the Brazilian has in the title winning side.
Key Stat- Fernandinho completes an average of 87.1 passes per game.
De Bruyne is a masterclass of a player. Being rejected from Chelsea just 4 years ago, the Belgian evolved into a tenacious passer and dribbler. Averaging 2.7 key passes and 3.6 long balls per game, De Bruyne can find pockets of space where no one has ever imagined. He is not afraid to shoot with 8 goals in the Prem and averaging 2.5 shots per game. If Mo Salah didn't sweep the league in his first season, the Belgian without certainty would be named Player of the Year.
Key Stat- De Bruyne has 16 assists in the Premier League.
The former Schalke player has firmly established himself at the Eithad. 10 goals and 15 assists this season have earned him the title Young Player of the Year. He is doing all this mesmerizing stuff at just 22 years old! The German zips through defenders with 2.8 dribbles per game. With stats like these, Sane has the potential to become world class.
Key Stat- Sane is the youngest player this season to earn double figures for goals and assists in Europe's top 5 leagues.
Sterling was seen as a vital player for the Citizens with his pace and dribbling but the Englishmen lacked in product. This season he made up for it with 18 goals in the Premier League. The former Reds player has molded into a shining piece of sterling silver under Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard trusts him to play as a false 9 because of his thirst for goals. Sterling has a strong and triumphant future ahead of him.
Key Stat- Sterling has contributed 36 goals across all competitions this season.
Kane is a phenomenal striker. Skill, hold up play, finishing, tekkers, he has it all. He has scored 20+ goals for 3 consecutive seasons. He was only beaten to the Golden Boot by Mo Salah. The Tottenham homeboy has had an illustrious career with an even illuminating future ahead of him.
Key Stat- Kane has scored 30 goals in the Premier League this season.
Salah is a god. No joke this guy is insane. The class of Lionel but the goal scoring ability of Shevchenko. Salah was hungry for goals the second his bags landed in England. He won the Golden Boot scoring 32 goals this season. More than anyone else has ever done in history. With someone this miraculously talented, Salah will be gold if he can replicate this form next season.
Key Stat- Salah has won 9 awards this season. Golden Boot, Premier League Player of the Month (twice), PFA Team of the Year, African Player of the Year, CAF's Finest XI (twice), PFA Player of the Year, and FWA Footballer of the Year.
