First of all, yes, what you've heard is true. Zooie's is located inside a gas station. But, wait!!! Keep reading.
While most gas station fare is dubious, at best, and dangerous to your health, at worst, the treats at this cool little shop are probably the ONLY exception to the rule.
I had the great pleasure of coming across these guys at a specially-catered event. After hearing the story of how this brand came to be, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to write about this exceptional company. The owner, Arezoo, (hence the name of the shop), is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. And while their shop may be located in a strange place for a cookie/ coffee shop, you have to admit, the place itself is more than your average gas station. The word “clean” just doesn't quite cover it.
Beginning at around 5:30AM you will have youropportunity for one epic pit stop before work, with a unique selection of cookies and other sweets, and a barista-served espresso or latte of your choice to chase it down. Let's not forget your car's breakfast, too; it is a gas station, after all.
I was able to try some of their most popular cookies, as well as their delicious truffle brownie and zesty lemon bars. The cookies range from old-school favorites like chewy chocolate chip to Paleo-friendly cookies made with gluten-free ingredients and protein-packed nuts. I could really taste the coconut mixed in with the chocolate; a combination which I absolutely loved. The thing that makes each and every single one of their cookies extra special is the texture and attention to detail where the flavor is concerned. The cookies pack a combination of different sensations, from soft & chewy to crispy & decadent; the flavors vary, depending on what you order, and they even have a few savory options like their Baklava Cookie with pistachio and rose water, both of which work surprisingly-well together.
Their non-cookie options are just as unforgettable. My favorite is their melt-in-your-mouth Truffle Brownie, which will have you feeling both satisfied and craving more after just one bite. As of now, they also serve frozen yogurt with all the fixin's, and only a couple more cents per ounce. My suggestion is to get it affogato-style, for you coffee-lovers out there.
What I love most about these guys is that they not only put love and passion into everything they sell, (some of these recipes have taken dozens of tries to perfect), but they also ensure that everything is fresh when you come in and buy it, (No 3-day-old pastries here!). Zooie's isn't your ordinary cookie shop; and your taste buds will know it when you take the first bite.
So, polish up that sweet tooth, and watch out Santa Monica, they're coming for you next!
