The Los Angeles Chargers were eliminated from the playoffs with a 41-28 loss on the road against the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon. They were trailing 35-7 at the half and Los Angeles looked lost. That was the only game this season they lost on the road. The defense looked invincible and Philip Rivers didn't look sharp.
Rivers is 37 years old and he only has one more year left on his contract. The Chargers will have seven draft picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. It is possible that they could draft Rivers's successor in this draft. Geno Smith is Los Angeles's current backup and he isn't the long term answer.
Speaking of long term, the Los Angeles Chargers will start playing at the new LA Stadium in Hollywood Park in 2020. They will play at the StubHub Center for the 2019 season.
Los Angeles felt like their was their best chance to win the Super Bowl in the Philip Rivers era. The Chargers have a lot of talent on the roster moving forward. They are stacked at running back and wide receiver on the offensive side of the ball. Los Angeles should draft another tight end in the later rounds to compliment Hunter Henry. Antonio Gates will most likely retire. Gates will be a first ballot hall of famer.
The Chargers could also use some help on the interior offensive line. It was one of the key problems for Los Angeles this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, they have a very good defensive line and secondary. The linebacking core isn't very strong and they could improve the linebacker position in the NFL Draft.
Next season could very well be Philip Rivers final season in the NFL. He has not won a Super Bowl in his career. As long as nothing drastic happens in the offseason, they could very well get back to the playoffs next season. Head Coach Anthony Lynn could win coach of the year this year, but Matt Nagy of the Chicago Bears will probably win that award.
The Los Angeles Chargers have not won a Super Bowl in franchise history. They are one of 12 teams in the NFL to have not won a Super Bowl before.
