The Philadelphia Eagles Should Be in Good Hands Moving Forward

It looked as if the Philadelphia Eagles were going to continue their playoff magic against the New Orleans Saints on the road on Sunday afternoon. They had a 14-0 lead in the first-quarter. Philadelphia didn't score a point for the rest of the game and they lost 20-14.

The Eagles had several things not go there way in this game. Offensive lineman Brandon Brooks tore his Achilles in the first-quarter and he didn't return. It is very possible he could miss half of the 2019 season, if not all of it. Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox also got hurt in the second-quarter and he was limited for the rest of the game and it hurt them defensively.

Before the two-minute warning in the fourth-quarter, Nick Foles threw a pass to Alshon Jeffrey and it went off his hands and it was picked off by Marshon Lattimore. Jeffrey was in utter disbelief and Head Coach Doug Pederson and other teammates consulted him. The Philadelphia Eagles aren't the defending champions any more and where do they go from here?

The first order of business for Howie Roseman to figure out is Nick Foles getting traded, is Carson Wentz getting traded, or is both of them staying? The most likely answer is that Nick Foles will be the odd man out heading into 2019. Nate Sudfeld would become the full time backup if either Foles or Wentz is traded. A few teams could use a quarterback.

Nick Foles is already 29 years old and Carson Wentz is only 26 years old. Even though he has been injury prone, Wentz is still the answer long term because he is very athletic and is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL when healthy. It wasn't his fault that Philadelphia started the season 6-7. They were 4-6 at one point during the season.

When Nick Foles was named the starter for the rest of the season because of a Wentz injury, the Eagles won four straight games with Foles before today began. Foles was also Super Bowl LII MVP last season against the New England Patriots. He only started because of a Carson Wentz torn ACL that sidelined him after Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams on the road. He was on his way to winning MVP that season.

Had the Philadelphia Eagles won today, the talks of Carson Wentz being traded would have cranked up even more but it basically died down after they lost.

Other than the quarterback position, they need to re-sign running back Jay Ajayi. Not having him for most of the season hurt this team in the running game. Corey Clement, Wendell Smallwood, and Josh Adams will all be back next season in the backfield. If they don't re-sign Jay Ajayi, they should consider signing Le'Veon Bell in the offseason.

Wide receiver Golden Tate will be a free agent and it is possible they don't bring him back. Other wise, they are pretty good at the wide receiver and tight end position.

The offense line is pretty good but they are getting older. They should consider drafting a blindside tackle or an interior lineman this offseason.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Philadelphia Eagles are pretty good in the front seven. The problem with this team defensively this season was on the back end. They did have a ton of injuries which didn't help, but Philadelphia needs to look at cornerback and safety help. It is very possible the Eagles don't bring back corner Ronald Darby.

The Philadelphia Eagles will have at least six draft picks this offseason. If this team is healthy next season and if they make all the right decisions in the offseason, Philadelphia could very well be back in the playoffs and contend for another Super Bowl title.
