NFL Head Coaching Vacancies; Who Has the Best to Offer?

The day after the regular season ends, many NFL teams usually make changes to either the front office or coaching staff. The Green Bay Packers fired Mike McCarthy (12 plus years) and the Cleveland Browns fired Hue Jackson (two plus years) before the season ended. On Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired Dirk Koetter (three years) and the New York Jets fired Todd Bowles (four years).

On Monday, the Arizona Cardinals fired Steve Wilks (one year), the Miami Dolphins fired Adam Gase (three years), the Cincinnati Bengals fired Marvin Lewis (16 years), and the Denver Broncos fired Vance Joseph (two years). That should be able all of the head coach firings for now, but you never know.

With all these firings occurring, teams have already started requesting interviews for coordinators or former head coaches. Who has the best coaching vacancy open?

The best job available right now would be the Cleveland Browns. They went from 0-16 to 7-8-1. Cleveland was a play or two away in a couple of games from being a 10-6 or 11-5 team. The Browns will most likely be a playoff team next season. They have Bakey Mayfield, Nick Chubb, Denzel Ward, Myles Garrett, and more pieces in place right now. Cleveland should keep Gregg Williams as head coach and Freddie Kitchens as the offensive coordinator.

The second best job that is available is the Denver Broncos. They won the Super Bowl three years ago and Denver still has some pieces in place. Emmanuel Sanders, Phillip Lindsay, Von Miller, Bradley Chubb, Chris Harris Jr., and Bradley Roby are some key players on this team. The Broncos still have an elite defense, but they need to bring in a solid offensive coordinator if they bring in a defensive minded coach. Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Faganio would be the perfect fit for this job.

The third best job that is available is the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals have a lot of key pieces in place. They have the quarterback situation settled with Andy Dalton. They have a starting running back in Joe Mixon. A.J. Green and Tyler Boyd are their top two wide receivers. Carlos Dunlap is the heart and soul of Cincinnati's defense. This team just needs discipline and a new voice. If they hired Hue Jackson, it would be a monstrous mistake. Mike McCarthy would be a really good fit for this team. They will also interview Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor and that wouldn't be a bad hire either.

The fourth best job that is available is the Green Bay Packers. Even though they have Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback, Green Bay is not at the top of this list because they don't attract free agents for some reason. They also have not drafted very well recently. The Packers need a coach that will be on the same page with Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay is expected to interview a ton of candidates, including New Orleans Saints tight end coach Dan Campbell.

The fifth best job that is available is the New York Jets. Sam Darnold is only 21 years old and he has a lot of potential. They will be in a rebuild. Jamal Adams is the heart and soul of this defense. Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will most likely interview for the job. He did wonders with the Chiefs offense this past season. Doug Pederson (Philadelphia Eagles) and Matt Nagy (Chicago Bears) were the last two offensive coordinators under Andy Reid to be hired for a head coaching job and they both have had success.

The sixth best job that is available is the Miami Dolphins. This team needs a quarterback but this roster does have some talent on it. Adam Gase overachieved with this team this past season with a 7-9 record. I thought they were only going to win two games in 2018. The reason why Gase was let go because of how bad the quarterback play was. The AFC is not that strong and a good offseason could get this team back in the playoffs next season. I am not sure who would be a good fit for this football team.

The seventh best job that is available is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jameis Winston will be the starting quarterback next season, but will he be the starter beyond then? It seems like no one wants to interview for this job right now. The defense is a mess. DeSean Jackson doesn't want to be with Tampa Bay next season. This team is far away from being a contender.

The eighth best job that is available is the Arizona Cardinals. Other than Josh Rosen, Chandler Jones, and Patrick Peterson, this team doesn't have anything else. They had the worst record in the league in the NFL this past season for a reason. This team didn't have a lot of cohesion. Larry Fitzgerald might retire and he should. Arizona will be going through a long rebuilding phase. They will need a coach who will be patient during this rebuild and help Josh Rosen develop into a very good quarterback.
