The New York Mets have missed the playoffs the last two seasons. With Brodie Van Wagenen in his first stint as their general manager, he want to make a trade to send a message to this team. The Mets acquired second baseman Robsinson Cano and closer Edwin Diaz from the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Jay Bruce, right-handed pitcher Anthony Swarzak, and prospects (OF) Jared Kelenic, (RHP) Justin Dunn, and (RHP) Gerson Bautista.
Cano still has five years remaining on his contract. He will be owed $24 million a year. Robinson Cano was suspended 80 games last season for PEDs. His batting average last season .303 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI's. Cano's on-base percentage was .374 last season. He will most likely be the Mets starting second baseman next season.
Edwin Diaz is only 24 years old. His record was 0-4 with a 1.96 ERA last season with the Seattle Mariners. Diaz pitched 73.1 innings and gave up 41 hits and 17 runs. He walked 17 batters and struck out 124. Edwin Diaz had 57 saves last season and he blew four saves.
The New York Mets get the closer they desperately need. They still need more help in the bullpen. New York needs to sign a player like Andrew Miller or Adam Ottavino.
As for the players the Seattle Mariners received, outfielder Jay Bruce still has two more years remaining on his deal. He will be owed $13 million each season. Bruce is 31 years old and he had some injury issues alst season. His batting average last season was .223 with nine home runs and 37 RBI's, along with two stolen bases. Bruce's on-base percentage was .310.
Swarzak's record last season was 0-2 with a 6.15 ERA. He pitched in 26.1 innings last season and gave up 28 hits and 18 runs. Anthony Swarzak walked 14 batters and struck out 31. He had four saves. Swarzak blew one save last season.
Outfielder Jared Kelenic is now the second best prospect in the Seattle Mariners farm system. He was the sixth overall pick by the New York Mets in the 2018 MLB Draft. Kelenic is just 19 years old and he has a ton of upside. I was hoping the Mets wouldn't give him up in this deal, but they did.
Jared Kelenic is projected to reach the majors in 2022. He will play next season with Short-A Everett AquaSox. In the minors last season, his batting average was .286 with six home runs and 42 RBI's, along with 15 stolen bases. Kelenic's on-base percentage was .371.
Right-handed pitcher Justin Dunn is now the Seattle Mariners third best prospect. He is projected to reach the majors some time next season. Dunn will start the 2019 season in Double-A with the Arkansas Travelers. His record last season was 8-8 with a 3.59 ERA. Justin Dunn pitched in 135.2 innings and gave up 128 hits and 66 runs. He walked 52 batters and struck out 156.
Right-handed pitcher Gerson Bautista was mostly in the minors last season, but he did make a couple of appearances with the New York Mets. Bautista's record in the minors last season was 4-1 with a 5.14 ERA. In 39.2 innings pitched, he gave up 54 hits and 30 runs. Bautista walked 18 batters and struck out 54.
With the Mets, his record was 0-1 with a 12.46 ERA. In 4.1 innings pitched, Gerson Bautista gave up eight hits and six runs. He walked five batters and struck out three.
This is a very risky trade for the New York Mets, but the Seattle Mariners were able to improve their horrendous farm system with this trade.
