South America has always been on my list. I read about and see captivating images of Patagonia, Iguazu Falls, Machu Picchu and a few other sites.
But I didn't seriously consider traveling there because of the perception of the region as dangerous, politically unstable and violent. From forums to friends who have shared their experiences with me, that's the feeling I get from South America.
Until one day when I stumbled upon a flight deal. It sounds too good to be true. For a round trip to Colombia and from Peru, it was just almost $500.
I don't know why but it didn't take me 5 minutes to decide to book that trip. But I haven't looked back since.
Fast forward to today, I'm glad I made that impulsive decision to book that flight. Not only did I get to trek the incredible Machu Picchu that I've always wanted to do, but I discovered and so much about the Inca civilization, met so many friendly Colombians, learned how to pronounce 'hasto pronto' (see you soon in Spanish) and whatnot. But most importantly, I learned not to avoid places just based on hearsay, but rather to go out there and experience it for myself.
This trip has been nothing short of amazing. I felt like I left a part of my heart in South America, but it certainly won't be the last time. I'm ready for more to come this year!
