The day has finally come where Anthony Davis requests a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans. Losing will make a player do that. The good news is that it happened at a good team and both parties can part ways with little damage.
Don't get me wrong, losing Davis will make the Pelicans average. The reason they should be happy is that they know Davis' intention instead of being mislead until it's too late. Now, they can actively trade Davis and get players and draft picks in return.
Many people have speculated whether Davis was even going to be traded or not. There has been a lot of interest in him but he hadn't made a public statement about leaving before. After losing a lot of games and seeing his team not in the playoff race, he finally made up his mind to leave. The question everyone is asking is where will he end up?
While the Los Angeles Lakers are determined to land Davis, other teams will have a good chance to land him. The Lakers have a lot of young players they can offer for Davis. That is great and all but what will they do when the Boston Celtics offer a better trade package?
They are my pick to land Davis. That team is overflowing with star players and some of them will leave one way or another. I would expect the Celtics to trade a few for Davis considering how much they want to land Davis.
The interest for Davis may be the most we will see for a player in a long time. I expect about 20 teams to make trade offers for him. And teams will part with almost any player to land Davis. He is just that good. But Davis wants to join a team that can contend for a championship and that will eliminate half of the teams in the NBA.
Will Davis be traded before the trade deadline? The trade deadline is on February 7th. That is less than two weeks. Teams can make a trade offer before that but I don't know if the Pelicans will rush it. They can wait and take their time in free agency.
Davis making his intentions public is an early Christmas present. It will be talked about for the rest of the season. That is because Davis is one of the top three players in the NBA on both ends. That is a rare thing and a sure sign Davis will win a championship soon.
